I recently purchased a Spex Elf for 800 dollars. It is my first kit car and I have a few questions about it. I have only found 2 sites that have info. One site says that 20 bodies were produced and then the molds were sold. Were more bodies made after the molds were sold? If so how many? Is there any way for me to track down the history of my car? The person I bought it off of didn't know anything about it. It was given to his son as payment for repairing an airplane. Can I swap a newer model Civic drivetrain into it? The reason I ask this last question is the original 77 cvcc engine finally gave out on me recently.

Your best bet would be to find a Honda forum, since the drivetrain in your car is basically stock, they would know better what kind of engine swaps are possible, or you might be able to find an older honda motor to put in the car.
you might want to look up the designer of the car, Paul Deutchman, as he has since worked for callaway, and may know what if there were any more ever created.
Good Luck!

I sent an email to Deutschman Design Sunday and was pleasantly surprised to find a reply from Paul Deutschman himself Monday morning. It turns out he still owns one of the Spex Elf's. His also is yellow. He estimates that there are only about a dozen of these left in existence. He has been extremely friendly and helpful. I will post more info as he sends it to me. Thank You EKIMBALL for the suggestion to contact him directly. I never would have expected him to reply himself.

No problem, glad I could help.
The car almost looks like an early Toyota MR2, very cool. keep us informed on the progress.
